Surprisingly, only a few people have ever asked me what I’ll do when the seven years are up and I’ve completed each goal. The only thing that crossed my mind was to do seven more goals, or maybe up the ante and do a 10x10. What to put on that list? What rules should be adopted? Easy, tiger, we’re lightyears away from that. Mostly.
Aside from the Parent Project, all the goals were made with indepence in mind. What I mean is that in the 20s & 30’s many people start looking to settle down, get hitched, and have a few hatchlings. While that’s awesome, I didn’t want something like “Have a kiddo” to be one of the goals. That would mean fitting another human being into my very accomplishment-driven list, and making the little spud not much more than a trophy for the accomplishment. Even Disney couldn’t rework that into a magical fairy tale. The only exception to this would have been something extraordinary, something loveable, and something loyal. Can you guess?

So I wanna dog. Always have. But given my work schedule, cramped apartments, fenceless yards, and inability to take care of even myself, I’ve never gone through with it. As of this weekend, however, all that’s going to change - and not because I went to the pound.Friday evening the last roomate, Riley, arrives. She’s a 3 year old pup, owned by Emma and Laura, who’s spent much of the last month in the wide open spaces of Washington DC. As of this weekend, she’ll be moving back in and with her comes my chance to have a dog without any of the headache of actually having a dog. She’s trained, loveable, and hopefully, ready to go running!
Okay, okay, I can hear you scoff from the other side of the world. Its shallow and lame on my part, maybe. But its also kinda great that I get to work my way into being a dog owner and see if its something I should even think about putting on the next list. Think of me as some pet foster parent. If all goes well, we can start brainstorming awesome names for a future dog. If it doesn’t go well then its goldfish for me and mine. Either way, never fear, no animal will be harmed in this process.
